Aeration & Dethatching
Getting your lawn off to the right start in the spring makes all the difference heading through the season! Aeration breaks up the compaction of the lawn, allowing air, light, water, and nutrients to access the root zone of the grass, encouraging new and more resilient growth! Dethatching (also known as “power-raking”, removes the dead buildup of “thatch” in the lawn, allowing the new grass to grow in more vigorously, and also aiding in water, air, and nutrients reaching the roots of your lawn. These services are usually done in March or April, depending on the weather.
Cedar Hedge Trimming
Keeping your cedar hedges trimmed up well not only aids in their general overall appearance, but also helps with their health, airflow/pest issues, and determines greatly how well they hold up against the snow load in the winter! We always suggest having your cedars trimmed in the fall, so that you get the most months of them looking freshly cut, but springtime is also a great time to get them trimmed up and looking fresh for the summer!
Fall Pruning/Cleanup
It’s essential to get your yard properly ready for the winter! Leaves should be removed from the lawns so they don’t kill the grass over the winter or encourage snow mould. Shrubs should be pruned back neatly to prevent snow damage. Perennials and Ornamtenal Grasses should be cut back, and leaf litter, the last remaining weeds, and other plant debris should be removed and hauled away. We’ll come in, do these things, and haul away the yard waste so you can simply enjoy the end result! Fall Cleanup usually takes place during the months of October and November.
Fruit Tree & Ornamental Pruning
Your fruit trees and ornamentals (Japanese Maples, Karagana, Weeping Birch, etc.) sometimes just need some TLC! Whether it’s to maintain a certain shape, bring it back under control, or boost fruit production, a late winter/early spring pruning can set you up for success for the coming year(s)! We typically do this work in February or March, prior to the leaves breaking out, for best results.
Herbicide/Weed Spray
Sometimes, the only way to effectively handle a weed problem is to spray them. We don’t love chemicals (who does?), but sometimes it’s the only option. In these cases, we can set up a spray program for you to tackle these weeds in a more cost-effective way, saving time and labour by using these chemical tools effectively. Spraying typically takes place starting in April and running through the end of October, but can be set up as one-off visits or a full seasonal program.
Irrigation Repairs
Water is a precious resource, and we need to steward it well! Leaks, breaks, inefficiencies with nozzles and sprinkler heads—all of these create challenges that need to be addressed. Often, if left unresolved, these issues can cause major water damage! Let our trained technicians take the stress off by repairing your irrigation issues and giving you peace of mind.
Irrigation Startup
In our semi-arid climate in the Okanagan, proper water coverage and usage is essential! Let us come in, test and adjust your system for proper coverage, and program your controller for appropriate seasonal runtimes, so you can have the confidence that things are being watered well. Irrigation Startup typically takes place sometime in April or early May.
Lawn Overseeding & Topdressing
Sometimes, you just need to help the lawn along a bit by supplementing the soil or adding new grass seed. Whether it’s damage from a snow plow, a pet, leaves left on the lawn, or just general thinning or weak areas of the turf, adding some solid, organically rich soil and/or new seed can make all the difference. Typically, we aim to do this in the early spring or the fall, when the temperatures are cool, to aid in germination of the seed.
Mowing
For the best result, we recommend weekly mowing of your lawn, cut between 2-3 inches in height (if you want to know why, feel free to ask us!). We’ll come in, line-trim all the turf edges, mow the lawn (we’ll even bag and haul-away the clippings, or dispose of them in your green bin if you’d prefer!), and blow any excess clippings off your pathways, patios, and driveways, leaving things looking clean and well-groomed. Mowing typically begins sometime in the first half of April, and usually runs until the end of September or middle of October, depending on the weather.
Renewal Pruning
Sometimes things get a little out of control, and need a “reset”. While the early spring (prior to leaf-out) is generally the best time for this (we can be more aggressive than any other time of year), there’s often much we can do even later in the season as well. Renewal pruning allows us to come in, aggressively reset your plants and shrubs (either by splitting, major structural pruning, or other means), and get things back under control so you can manage your yard, or at least see what you’ve got to deal with once again.
Spring Pruning/Cleanup
This is the service that gets your property off on the right foot for the season! We’ll come in, prune back any shrubs, perennials, or other plants in ways that are not only aesthetic but also seasonally and horticulturally appropriate, clean out the leaves, weeds, and other plant debris that is in the beds, lawns, and the corners of your deck/patio, and basically just get your yard looking fresh and ready to grow for the year! Spring Cleanup usually occurs sometime between the first of March and the May long weekend, depending on when we can get you into our schedule!
Summer Pruning/Cleanup
By the time the middle of summer rolls around, things can begin to look a little “hairy”—shrubs have sprouted out-of-control, and perennials may be tired and in need of some deadheading or other TLC. Our summer pruning & cleanup takes care of all these items, along with any major weeding or debris cleanup in the beds as well, giving your yard the touch-up it needs to keep looking great until the fall! Summer Cleanup generally happens in June or July.
Tree & Shrub Fertilization
In our valley, a lot of our neighbourhoods are built on poor clay or rocky soil. As a result, many of our shrubs and trees do well initially, only to suffer as time goes on due to a lack of proper nutrition. When this happens, all the water in the world won’t bring them back. We can get you on a fertilization program through our trusted partners that will help to breathe new life into your tired trees and shrubs, and will build the soil up over time to continue to support the overall health of your landscape.
Turf Fertilizer
One of the major ingredients to a green lawn is proper fertilization. We can get you on a 3x/year program for slow-release granular fertilizer that will encourage your lawn to look its best. If you prefer something more “organic”, we can get you on a 5x/year program of liquid fertilizer with one of our trusted partners, which will not only green up your lawn, but will build your soil quality with each application.
Weeding
Everyone hates pulling weeds. But they’re everywhere, and a constant problem! Our manual weeding may take the form of pulling, digging, hoe-ing, or even “scrubbing” the area with a line trimmer, depending on the requirements of the area and the end goal. In the end, the aim is to keep the weeds under control and at a manageable level—until we find a magical way to permanently eliminate them, it’s just an ongoing task! Weeding generally takes place in connection with the weekly mowing visits, and is available as an add-on service upon request.
We work closely with several trusted industry partners to offer complete property maintenance solutions–such as pest control, window-washing, gutter-cleaning, moss removal, arborist services, and so much more, at the same cost as if you’d called these companies yourself!
